Here’s a story on the CMU Webpage about the Outreach and Diversity TA that we’ve been proto-typing in the physics department for the past two years. The TA (funded as part of my startup at CMU) serves on both the Outreach and DEI committees in CMU physics, and works ~20 hours a week on the larger projects that are run through both (e.g. the Outreach committee’s work at local K-12 schools or the DEI committee’s recent climate site visit from APS). The idea is that since students are often already doing this work, they should at least get paid for it! It seems to working well so far, and will hopefully be expanded to more departments in the Mellon College soon!
